Herault 's river carving deep ravine

The Regional Environment Center for Central and Eastern Europe

A brief introduction

The General Council takes into account the difficulties to manage the peak period in a context of dry season with a large increase of population and tourists on coastal territories. It is largely involved in:

  • monitoring the underground water resources linked with rain data throughout a quality and quantity piezometric network to foresee droughts
  • forecast schemes for drinking water needs  (5M€/year subsidies)
  • developing drinking water researches and policies to control the water consumption (in compliance with the Regional Council and the National Services)

The General Council is responsible for analysing different resources as options to the coastal water infrastructures and for participating in financial support. Surveys have already been undertaken with river basin management structures and especially in a large regional diversifying water resource policies called "Aqua Domitia".
Being one of the key members in the political partnership in the region Languedoc-Roussillon, the General Council of Herault influences regional policies.

In WATER CoRe the General Council will focus mainly on technical, economic and social approaches for new strategies dealing with management of water scarcity, matching the WFD on an operational level in the river basin:

  • Improve the knowledge of water uses based on experiences of other regions in order to master the water demand in the Herault region.
  • Estimation of economic, social regulation and health components of water savings that impact water companies or public services. Both water savings and replacement of water resources (rain, grey or raw water) will be highlighted.
  • Share experiences of awareness for children in primary and junior schools based on a previous campaign.

This project is cofinanced by the ERDF and made possible by the INTERREG IVC programme

The Interregional Cooperation Programme INTERREG IVC, financed by the European Union’s Regional Development Fund, helps Regions of Europe work together to share experience and good practice in the areas of innovation, the knowledge economy, the environment and risk prevention. EUR 302 million is available for project funding but, more than that, a wealth of knowledge and potential solutions are also on hand for regional policy-makers.
